How to Use a Fire Extinguisher?

Fire extinguishers work by putting out fires when activated, and are intended for short-term use in everyday home fire situations. Extinguishers can be used to put out small fires, but may take a few seconds to fully release the agent in them. Extinguishers need not be connected to electricity, and must only be hooked up to a hose of water.

• Check for combustible materials—such as wood, paper or cardboard.
• Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Make sure the area is well ventilated.
• Select an appropriate extinguisher.
• Read the instructions on the extinguisher; test the extinguisher before each use; and make sure all bystanders are out of range when using it.
